The Wise Lady—A Goddess Inside
My younger sister preceded me into the realm of inner spirit. Upon her return from studying the theosophical work of Rudolf Steiner in Europe, Gini came to live with us for a while. The girls were little and I was a new single mother, over stressed and overwhelmed. My “baby” sister reassured me. Inside of me, she promised, was a wise woman who could be called on to comfort me and lead me to greater wisdom. I knew she was right because I touched that deep place each time I used my intuitive gift to help another person. But the enormous responsibility and pressure of bringing up my daughters could easily drown out my belief, causing personal panic to prevail over the inner peace that I craved.
With more years under my belt as a single mother, and still fascinated by the wisdom inside, I read “The Mists of Avalon,” by Margaret Zimmer Bradley, who told the story of legends of King Arthur from the feminine perspective.
The strength of the female characters in the book leaped off the page and jumped into my heart. I could relate to their challenges and trials, and identify with the strong desire of Morgaine and Viviane to use magic and faith to reckon with the conflicts of their times and the struggles within themselves.
This is a story about men too—men who love, but whose love is not enough to make things right for others, including the women they love. However, it’s the women, beset by the forces of fate, who use their “sight” to grapple with complex turns of events and their feelings about all they go through. I found their skills and “tricks’ entertaining and inspiring. And how these ladies could cope, using their In-sight to assist them in facing their demons and dilemmas, and seeking the wisdom of their special “Goddess,” The Lady of the Lake. Living with the angst of my own conflicts, inner and outer, I thought how great it would be if there were really a Goddess who could take me over the rough waters of mothering alone into her realm of tranquility and faith. If only the mist would part and I could visit her palace, sit at her feet, and listen to her soft, soothing, knowing voice. As a single mother, I am not alone in that yearning.
Many women in various stages of Single Motherhood have told me similar stories of longing. Sometimes they wish that the love of men could have saved them; and just as often they yearn for the sweet guidance of other women. They seem to crave more than just social support. They seem to be longing for a “Lady of the Lake,” the wise woman who can offer intuitive guidance, but more importantly show them the way to use their own magic to achieve wisdom and serenity; to manifest their hearts’ desires, to nurture those they cherish; and to love themselves into strength and wholeness.
What do you think it would be like if you could trust that the Wise Lady lives inside of you, waiting for you to reach inside and find the magic of believing in Your true Self to guide you to the right next step to take in any situation.
What I am telling you is this: You are the Lady, and you can part the mists of confusion and doubt to reach the sacred island inside your own heart and mind. The lady awaits your coming and is ready to offer the guidance and the
wisdom with which your Essential Self will flourish. You have only to ask her counsel.
Now you might like to try this:
Imagine yourself in a setting that you find inviting and peaceful. You may be in a
garden, in a meadow, or on a mountain. Perhaps you are lying on your favorite beach or walking in deep and cool woods. You can be anywhere you picture yourself to be. Wherever that is, imagine you are slowly moving toward a beautiful and sparkling mist. As you get closer to the mist, see it lift, revealing a
radiant being, a Lady waiting for you with open arms, with Love. As you approach the Lady, see her light, feel her presence, and sense her courage.
The Lady says to you:
“My child, I have awaited your presence, and am here to serve you. What
do you request of me?”
When you are ready, you may ask her any question you have in your mind. Once you have made your request, just breathe and be, trusting that you will receive the guidance you seek. Sit quietly and listen to the whispers of your own thoughts. In the precious voice inside will be answers.
Trust what comes to you no matter how silly it seems. Allow all negative thoughts to come in and go out, as you return to your quiet listening. When you come back to the outside world, you might want to write down some of the ideas that emerged from deep within your Self. This ability to reach inside and access wisdom is The Lady’s “magic.” This is a gift you possess. You can learn to reach the wisdom, recognize it, and understand how to use The Lady’s insight in your life.
The Lady inside is there to serve you. She can help you understand the deeper meaning of your own personal story. She can guide you to see the truth and the significance of life events, past and present, and perhaps even future.
